Tappahannock Warrant Checks
Tappahannock Police has no public warrant-search portal. The town department can route a police-side question or explain where a citation started, but the court clerk controls the case date, payment, and any failure-to-appear entry. For adult traffic and ordinance cases, choose Essex General District Court in Virginia’s GDC search. Search by your name as it appears on the summons, case number, or hearing date.
Then call the clerk at 804-443-3744 about an FTA, capias, or recall. The Sheriff’s Warrants/Civil Process staff can confirm service routing at 804-443-3347 or 3346. The magistrate number is for issuance or bail questions, and its Essex office has limited in-person coverage.
- Use the Tappahannock Police contact only for citation origin or police service routing.
- Search Essex GDC by the name on the summons, case number, or hearing date.
- Call the GDC clerk to confirm any court process, payment, or next date.
- Call the Sheriff about county service; call the magistrate for issuance or bail direction.
- Use counsel to plan an appearance or recall request if process is active.
Tappahannock Warrant Records and Town Population
Tappahannock is Essex County’s only incorporated town and county seat. The 2020 Census reports 2,193 residents. That figure describes the incorporated place only; it is not a warrant count or measure of police activity.
The Census incorporated-place table lists the town’s population.
The census table gives local population context only, not any warrant or case total.
The Census Bureau's main data portal links broader county and place tables. Use the incorporated-place row when describing Tappahannock itself; countywide figures cover a larger area and do not measure local court activity.
The U.S. Census Bureau data site provides general population sources.
Population context helps identify the town boundary; warrant status comes from the court or Sheriff.
Tappahannock Warrant Court and Police Routing
The town has a police department, but no current separate municipal court. Current town traffic and ordinance cases use Essex GDC. The offices below handle separate parts of a Tappahannock case.

The Tappahannock Police page lists its public contact and department resources.
The department is the town law-enforcement contact, while court status belongs with GDC.
Tappahannock Police Has No Warrant Portal
The town police site offers public contact, divisions, press releases, reports, and a FLOCK transparency link. It does not describe a warrant-search, active-warrant, or most-wanted service. No city warrant phone line was located either.
Call 804-443-3992 for police-side routing, not a court disposition. Ask GDC about a case number, date, payment, or recall. Do not treat a public safety or transparency link as a warrant database.
The town department directory lists where Police is located.
The directory helps route a town question but does not provide court or warrant status.
Warrants in Tappahannock: The Main Types
A town citation can begin with Tappahannock Police and then become an Essex GDC case. A missed court date may lead to further process, but the court chooses the action. An arrest warrant based on probable cause is a different process from a bench or FTA matter.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic process | May follow a missed date or other court action | Essex General District Court |
| Town ordinance case | Local citation proceeds in county district court | Essex General District Court |
| FTA / capias | May follow a missed setting; clerk confirms exact process | Issuing court |
| Arrest warrant | Probable-cause process from a complaint | Magistrate or authorized judicial officer |
Tappahannock Warrant Charter History
The town charter contains municipal-court and warrant-justice wording from an earlier legal structure. Virginia Code §16.1-69.1 abolished town municipal courts and transferred that jurisdiction to district courts serving the county. Current Tappahannock traffic and ordinance questions therefore go to Essex GDC.
The town’s long riverfront history gives context to its role as the county seat, but does not create a current city court. The town page describes its 1680 establishment and Rappahannock River setting.

The historic context helps distinguish the charter language from today’s district-court route.
What a Tappahannock Warrant Record Shows
No public Tappahannock warrant listing or town-specific number format was found. A GDC case result may show the underlying case, charge, hearing date, and entries the clerk has made. The court clerk must confirm whether the case carries active process.
| Case number | Copy the number on the actual Essex GDC record; no town code is published. |
|---|---|
| Name | Use the spelling from the summons or court paper. |
| Charge | May describe traffic, ordinance, or criminal process and a Code section. |
| Issuing court | Essex General District Court for current town traffic/ordinance matters. |
| Hearing date | Confirm any missed or changed date with the clerk. |
| Service/status | Ask the clerk and Sheriff whether process is active, served, returned, or recalled. |
Tappahannock Warrant Check in Essex GDC
Choose Essex General District Court, then search by the name as shown on the summons, the case number, or the hearing date. The interface offers Current, Archived, and All data status. The default is Current; Archived covers cases before January 2007. The court help says a wildcard is allowed when spelling is uncertain.
Online case data is not the official record and may not show a warrant flag. Use a result to locate the case, then call the clerk to confirm process, amount due, and next date.
Tappahannock Warrants and Essex County
Tappahannock has its own Police Department, while current town traffic and ordinance cases are held by Essex GDC; the Sheriff handles process sent for service, and Virginia’s VCIN/NCIC systems are law-enforcement-only. For the full county court and records route, see Essex County warrant records.
Warrant flow: Tappahannock Police citation or complaint › Essex General District Court or magistrate › Sheriff / directed officer for service › Virginia VCIN/NCIC entry where applicable.
Tappahannock Warrant Offices: Police and Court
Police can explain a citation’s origin or a law-enforcement contact. The court clerk can tell you about the hearing, payment, or court entry. The Sheriff can say whether process was delivered for service. A reader may need more than one call because the offices do not keep the same record.
The town website provides public reports and department information, not a warrant lookup. Use the court number when the question is a case date or recall.
The town’s official Our Town page gives local civic context.
The town contact is for civic administration, not for a warrant or court decision.
Tappahannock Traffic Warrant: Missed Date
If a Tappahannock Police ticket led to a missed court date, search the Essex GDC case and call the clerk. The court may continue the matter, issue show-cause process, or take another action; no one should assume a warrant was or was not issued from the calendar alone.
Before paying online, read the summons. An eligible pre-court payment is a waiver of the hearing and a guilty plea. Ask the clerk whether payment is the right step and whether it addresses any separate process.
Public Access to Tappahannock Warrant Records
Virginia FOIA applies to existing public records held by the appropriate office, subject to exemptions. Adult GDC case information is searchable, while juvenile law-enforcement files and many JDR matters are restricted; sealed and active investigative material may also be limited. The Tappahannock Police page does not promise warrant disclosure.
Town Record Boundaries:
Virginia FOIA, §2.2-3700 sets the open-records policy subject to exemptions.
Virginia Code §2.2-3704 explains requests, inspection, copies, and charges.
Virginia Code §16.1-301 protects juvenile law-enforcement records except defined cases.
